Homeschooling is a Challenge

Well, public school let out for summer vacation last week. So every single day since then the each neighborhood kid knock on the door at LEAST once during our school hours. Which, in all honesty is about to make me become a not so nice neighbor. lol. Every time the knock I nicely let them know that we are doing school. Please do not knock until after 3 pm and yet an hour later there is another child back at the door knocking.

We now have a nice sign hanging on our door that says "DO NOT KNOCK! School is in session!" So far, they seem to be ignoring it. :sigh: I'm really  not sure what else to do. I've tried ignoring the knocking and they just stand there knocking until we answer! Would it be illegal to rig up an electrical shock device for anyone who grabs the handle on the screen door? I'm baffled at what else we can do to get the point across to them.

In a normal summer we would be taking a short summer vacation as well. But with my husband being diagnosed with cancer last fall we missed quite a few days of school due to doctor appointments, chemo treatments and the everyday trials that go along with a major medical issue. So this summer will be filled with school work and field trips Monday - Thursday to make sure that we meet our state requirement of school hours. Not to mention that next school year will be much easier with them doing math and reading each day. We wont have to do revisit all the previous years work. They will still remember how to do their math. YAY!

So far this has been very difficult for the family. Not just the knocking that is a huge distraction in our day but also the neighbor kids are giving my kids a really hard time about doing school. I have had one of my poor kiddos crying over the hurtful things they say. Here are a few of their favorite things to tell my kids after they are told they can't play outside and are doing school.

  1. I feel really sorry for you, you are stuck doing schoolwork.
  2. You are going to have the worst summer ever.
  3. Really? Schoolwork? Your mom isn't very nice.
Yesterday we had a few long talks about it and my kids are finally coming around and not letting it bug them. But it still kills me each time I over hear them say something so mean and hurtful to my babies.

Why oh why do kids have to be so mean?

OK.. I'm done complaining now. lol

I don't think it would be illegal - at least not in my world. lol ;)

Hopefully the kids get the message in the next week or so, so you don't have to deal with it all.summer.long. If not, maybe rip out the doorbell and cover the door with several layers of bubblewrap so they can't knock? lol

Time to put up a sign, maybe... "Homeschool is still in session, if you're looking for the kids please come back after 3pm."

I've already disabled the door bell. It's one of the first things I do when I move. lol but bubble wrap? That is genius! hehehe

Ruth, I already got a sign up. The little stinkers ignore it :(

Oh good, I'm not the only one who gets rid of doorbells then - I can't stand the sound!

If people could just push it once it wouldn't be so bad.. But they don't and the ding dong is just irritating. lol so your not the only one :p

Sometimes we have to "train" people. I'm sure after several, lets say "nice" words, and a sign on the door, hopefully they'll get the picture. I'm sure it is annoying. Debi
